I had the opportunity to engineer and install the system that runs the Oscars Experience at the Academy Museum in LA. The experience allows guests to feel like they are accepting their very own Oscar Award and get a video to take home after. The project was almost a year of work and included over 200 individually controlled DMX light fixtures, 3 4k Sony FX9 cinema cameras, a full Dolby atmos surround sound system , and 4k video projection all synced to a system that can be ran and managed automatically.
Here is a wonderful write up about the project by Todd Martens

Samsung asked HYPNO to create an experience for their new flagship device the Galaxy S10+ for the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We created a giant selfie ball that carried the phone around you on a Bluetooth controlled cart created by AtoZ Theatrical in Kansas City. This project took a lot of work but we ended up with one of the coolest experiences at CES and had hundreds of people use it every day.
For my part I was tasked with overseeing the cart development and also build the main control system for the lighting in Touch Designer.
Huge props to Matt Bell for all the help with the visualizer!

(As a note, this was before Kanye’s horrible antisemitic rants. F*** Kanye West.)
For the Donda 2 album release in Miami, Busy Boy teamed up with Benjamin Gordon to develop a system to show Kanye West’s heartbeat in realtime for the hours leading up to the show. Within two weeks we developed a system using a Bluetooth heartrate monitor that would let us take a performers BPM and get it to a custom API with very little latency. The API was able to get the bpm information to the crew running the Ableton live project in the arena as well as to a custom streaming server that fed out to a dozen IMAX theaters all over the country.
These are the results of playing with the idea of making 3d versions of a realtime interactive heartbeat. Everything is done entirely inside Touchdesigner and rendered in realtime.
Roles:
-Creative Direction
-Art Direction
Sissel Tolaas asked Busy Boy to make an abstract interpretation of the journey of a scent particle for a projection element in her show at China Garden Expo. I did the design and art direction and the 3D was done by the amazing Matt Bell.
Roles:
-Touchdesigner programming
For the North American Launch of the newest car from Polestar, I helped design an interactive video backdrop with the fine folks at HYPNO. The whole setup was made out of 16 CRT tv’s synced with custom hardware all provided by Media Pollution, and could be changed on the fly via an xbox controller. The whole event was put on by the great team at Matte Projects.
Roles:
-Project Management
-Software Management
A Non-Agency reached out to Busyboy to develop a VR tech demo that could showcase the physical booth Delta Airlines had on display at CES 2020. Our team developed a prototype that showcased a variety of telepresence options and styles and could let designers and managers walk through their models before production. The demo was built in Unity and ran natively on Meta Quest 2 hardware.

For the global launch of their brand, Noble Panacea asked HYPNO to projection map onto the Bank Facade in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I was put in charge of the project and helped design and deliver 3D rendered animations that changed and moved throughout the night.
The 3D rendering were completed by the amazingly talented Matt Bell.
What I did on this project:
-Lighting Design/animation
-Touch Designer Programming
-Notch Integration
-Installation Support
Samsung asked HYPNO to create an experience for their new flagship device the Samsung Galaxy Fold at their USA flagship store in New York, Samsung 837. The experience included moving LED lights, folding interaction with the device and Deep integration with Notch and Touch Designer.
The amazing Notch animation and programming was done by Dave Weinstock and the sound design was done by the supremely talented Mena Sachdev. Check them out!
These are concept sketches from a pitch we made for the Stem Player. The activation concept puts a giant stem player in the center of a hazy dome. As guests interact with the player, lights in the ceiling reflect the lights on the player. The project focuses on recursion and looping in physical space.
Renders by the amazing Matt Bell
These are renders for an activation we pitched that would put a pepper’s ghost 3D hologram on the top of a small man made hill. The pitch was for a client who believed themselves to be Christ incarnate, so we thought a sermon on the mount vibe would be a good sell.

MMGY and the Susan G Komen Foundation of Greater Kansas City asked us to be a part of their campaign to encourage more screening among women and men in kansas city. Our solution was to shoot a series of videos that show the real emotional toll that breast cancer takes. We had three real local breast cancer survivors come and speak to us, then using a custom 3d stereo camera rig I built we tried to recreate the stories that they told us.
If you would like to see all the stories yourself, please download the Connected for the Cure app HERE.

For the 2015 Christmas Card for Hint, I decided to do a projection mapping experiment with the architecture around the office. Using the wonderful illustration talents of Kim Hyun and the motion control talents of Luke Mckinney we made the office come to life. This project was shot over two days, with each one of the illustrations taking about 30 mins.

From the Hint website:
Hint collaborated with hippo, for their client, St. Lukes Cardiology Center in St. Louis. We created an interactive installation allowing people to paint their own work of "heART." Constructing a 13' tall heart as a canvas, and using the Kinect software, elderly mall walkers and other potential customers could engage with the new brand. Participants could wave their hands and see brush strokes manifest on the screen. Once completed, their painting was uploaded to an online gallery at stlukes-heartart.com. They could also text a number to have their heART delivered to their phone.

Working with MMGY and Fairfield Inn, We had the opportunity to do a large activation in the Flatiron Plaza in Manhattan. The project involved making a video game that was easy enough for anyone to pick up, but could be challenging if someone spent some time with it. We came up with a bubble-bobble type game that showed how amazing you are. The other big part of the activation was a 20x6x3 foot sculpture that said #STAYAMAZING. The sculpture was made By AtoZ Theatrical in Kansas City from hot-wire lathed foam and painted with UV reactive paint so it would glow at night under special lighting.
Tons of fun, tons of work.

As part of the 2014 TEDxKC conference VML teamed us up with the Lawrence, Kansas based musician Kawehi so we could collaborate on the opening for the show. We hit it off with her immediately and found that her attitude meshed quite well with our experiential team.
Our final execution was designed to enhance her performance and give the opening of the show a real kick in the pants. Utilizing some custom software, a wireless router, and two cameras, we took her looping audio and made it manifest in a visual cacophony that melted brains and hearts.

The video was shot over the course of one week working 18-20 hour days (and I was one of the lucky ones who got sleep). The video made a big splash and has been covered in TIME, Pitchfork, Billboard, and Slate.com, the latter of which dubbed the song The Gay Anthem of the Year"
The photos are by the ever amazing Megan Mantia
"A couple of days ago, Perfume Genius announced the new album Too Bright and shared the stark, powerful first single “Queen.” Mike Hadreas, the man who performs as Perfume Genius, has said that the album represents a confident, confrontational embrace of queer identity and of the effects it can have, and that sure as hell comes through in the video, which is a truly great piece of work. Cody Critcheloe, the man behind the performance-art pop project SSION, directed the video, a surreal masterpiece that starts with Hadreas playing a street hustler and jumps into the unknown from there. The video has pigs, smashed computers, giant shrimp dinners, a one-legged Elvis impersonator, and a troupe of cheerleaders celebrating a suicide. It demands to be picked apart."

So back in 2011 I was given the opportunity to assist with stage design and animation for SSION at MoMA PS1 in New York. The project required almost a full hour of 2D and 3D animation mapped to seven separate projectors that combined to make up the bulk of all of the lighting on stage. We even got to cut holes in the ceiling, which means that I was a small part of permanently damaging a major American art museum. Yay!
What you see in these pictures and videos is a small documentation of the three days of sold-out shows. Three days that were the result of months of hard work, little sleep, and brilliant minds making art. Also I got to meet Debbie Harry, which was sweet!

This project was crazy. For the opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts we had to design a completely immersive experience. What we ended up doing was pretty darn cool. For more info, please read the wonderful description by Garrett Fuselier below:
For the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts grand opening event, we collaborated with local artists to create a once in a lifetime dinner experience for the organization's top sponsors and supporters. The visuals were projected across 3 walls and onto the roof of the Kauffman Center, providing an immersive visual and auditory experience.
We used a Weisscam to capture 15 shots of performers and/or physical elements at 2000 frames per second. The Canon 7D Mark II was used to capture the macro shots at 60 frames per second. The shoot happened in one day, yet the SFX planning, fashion design, makeup and hair design started months before. It was an amazing endeavor and a fun collaboration between such a diverse group of designers.
In order to bring the project together into one seamless experience we built a system that would allow the musicians playing during the dinner to control the particles flowing along the walls. With a total of fourteen high powered Christie projectors connected to our command center backstage we could control every pixel in the space and make adjustments using KORG midi controllers. Utilizing a mix of Cinder and Max5 we wrote custom software that connected to the soundboard of the band and drove the visuals flowing around the room blending music and light seamlessly.
Design was pivotal and present in every stage of the process. We worked closely with every artist involved, from the initial brainstorm to pen and paper, sketches, designs, moodboards, storyboards and SFX tests. It was definitely a fun process of trial and error for the one night to get it right.
The opening night gala followed the inaugural performance in the building. 1500 patrons of the arts came to eat, drink, and celebrate one of the most unique and beautiful performing arts spaces in the country.

Here is a video I helped on from Dum Dum Girls. The video was shot with an extremely quick turnaround in a warehouse in downtown KC. What is really amazing to me is the amount of effort, talent, and time artists in this city are willing to commit to someone else's vision. The video was directed by Cody Critcheloe and was shot and edited by Chris Good with the help of a ton of other people.
"We started the day with “Lost Boys And Girls Club,” a new track from recent S’gum interviewees Dum Dum Girls, but now the L.A. band has delivered a glossy — at least in terms of the styling — video for the cut. The video, which is a collaboration between the Dum Dums and H&M, depicts a group of leather-jacketed men and women (ostensibly the future members of the Lost Boys & Girls Club) positioned stoically while Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Dee Dee Penny sings from an Edenic fantasy land. Ultimately, she lures them to join her."

This video was a massive labor of love. I had a silly idea to do a music video in a decadent loft party, and before I knew it I was on set with 10+ crew and 80+ extras, who showed up for one long day of shooting without asking for anything in compensation. I cannot thank everyone involved enough.

For the third year of Truman Medical Center's Fashion For a Cause we were asked to redesign the concept of a fashion show, and also do it for a reduced budget. We came up with the idea of a sculpture of light.
Since we didn't have much experience using lighting consoles we decided to just bypass them completely and run the entire show out of Touch designer with a DMX interface. TD was really great on this project because it let us build the entire stage and do animation in Blender (animated by the incredible Joe Sullivan) then export the animation channels directly into the show control. Once we had all the appropriate channels assigned, this process allowed us to iterate extremely complicated changes on-site within seconds.
Also as a side note, that second pic is my custom TD interface. I themed it after 90210, because, you know... whatever.

This was the first big project I got to use with Touch Designer. We wrote a custom playback program using TD that also had reactive elements controlled by contact sensors under the runway and an iPad we could play like a drum pad. Plus we got to make that HUUUUUGE thing on stage.
From the Hint site:
Truman Medical Center approached Hint to create an experience for their annual fundraiser -- a fashion show hosted by Giuliana Rancic. Hint's services included live event production, stage design and a custom screen that transformed into the walkway for the fashion show. The animation projected onto the walls of the walkway also featured motion sensors on the floor that tracked the models as they walked on stage controlling the visuals projected on the wall by their pace and motion.

For the Addy Awards 2013 in Kansas City we were asked to do something with the idea "the spirit of creativity" who they had decided to illustrate as a deer in a suit. Jumping off from this point we thought it would be cool if we could give this character a mythical physical presence on stage, as if the awards were given down from on high. Using Touch Designer, a rubber mask, and and the accelerometer from an iPod Touch velcroed to the back of his head, we gave Mr. Creativity the power he deserved.
Big props goes to Ben Vanasse who sat on stage under the hot lights in a rubber mask for over two hours without complaining.

This project was a blast to work on and gave me the opportunity to work with the great Nick Vedros. Over to the right is the documentation of the night, and below that is the edited footage we showed.
From the Hint Website:
In order to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Hint was asked to design an experience that highlighted the museum's history and beauty. In collaboration with Vedros and Associates we shot hundreds of pieces in the museum and tied them together with the theme of "dot to dot." During the gala dinner, the video was presented in a fully immersive way to wrap around the patrons as they were dining.

For this project I worked with Sissel Tolaas and Garrett Fuselier to build an interactive game that let you navigate Kansas City by smells. The game involved a scavenger hunt location-based iPhone app that connected to a giant floor projection in the gallery of Grand Arts. The floor projection was a constantly shifting map of the city that combined data sent in from users with statistical data. You can read a whole lot more about the project on Grand Art's website.

This is documentation of the Party Arty 2010 event I did in collaboration with Steve Gardels, Brandon Barr, and Forester Michael. The Party was a fundraiser for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. At the event we had four projectors each connected to a computer that allowed us to set up the projectors in separate locations without needing to run cables. We controlled which videos were playing where using an ipod touch running MRMR software which we connected to a Max/MSP patch we wrote.

For this video I wanted to challenge myself to do a subdued music video. I wanted to do something dark and brooding without being overly violent. like the lyrics of the song, we hint at something that we never actually do.
To quote Mr. Shoare “The video is meant to mirror the emotions that I intended the song to provoke. Slow and methodical. Dark and determined. Yet still beautiful in some twisted way.”
Matt Blume was the Director of Photography on this project, and Nick Stout was the Camera Operator.
